How to be What you Want to be in 24 Hours or Less

Who are you_How can you be what you want to be if you don’t even know what you want to be? What if you want to be lots of things?

Above my desk I have a Confucius quote written on a post it note;

“He who chases two rabbits, catches none!”

The only way you’re going to get things done is if you do one thing at a time. And the only way you’re going to change your life is one day at a time. In Buddhism they have a thing called mindfulness which is about living in the present moment. (If I want to practice mindfulness some days I’ve got an app on my phone that reminds me to be mindful, with a little bell.)

Anyway. So what do you want to be when you grow up? An artist, a writer, a rock star? A butcher, a baker a candlestick maker? You don’t have to be everything all at once. And if you’re committed to your current job you can’t just take the day off to be something else.

Unless you’re Ferris Bueller.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

So, how do you be what you want to be, just for today?

The 24 Hour Plan

Step 1. Be grateful for where you’re at. Write it down or say it out loud. Express gratitude for whatever you already are.

“Thank you Universe for my job, my family, and my home!”

Step 2. Decide what you want to be, just for today. Try it on – like Mr Benn in the 1970’s UK children’s programme.

It doesn’t have to be a vocational role.  You could decide to eat healthily, or be more productive just for one day.

Step 3. Manifest it. This is optional. You could do a five minute manifestation meditation about being what you want to be just for today.

Step 4. Write down your 3 most important tasks. You may have a job, a family and other commitments so make this manageable within the time you have today. If you’ve taken the day off like Ferris Beuller you can commit the whole day to your plan. But if you want to be a rock star and have to go to work in a pizza restaurant then how can you think like a rock star for that day? Lots of artists, writers and rock stars started out in menial jobs and still followed their dreams. You can also use this method to enjoy the life you already have. For example, decide that just for today you will be the best pizza waitress ever. What would that look like? What would you do? How would you feel?

Maybe you can be a rock star, but only on Saturdays. But if you devote all of your Saturdays to writing songs, practicing, recording and gigging then you may end up doing it on a few other days too.
