 I was once techno-phobic and hated computers!

 When I was an unemployed art graduate living in London, I did a quick course in computers and admin and ended up working as a secretary. My boyfriend was a music composer, writing dance music in his basement, and I became fascinated with his recording software, synthesisers and samplers.

So I wrote to every recording studio in North London until one of them gave me a job! 

I managed the office, accounts and studio bookings for six years, and made cups of tea for the rich and famous. I was also able to pick up the basics of sound recording and music technology.

Using studio ‘down-time’ and working with professional recording engineers I recorded my own songs, spoken word and a poetry radio programme. I then retrained as a clinical hypnotherapist and for eight years in my private practice in London I would regularly make professional hypnosis recordings for my clients, using a laptop and a simple microphone.

Since then technology has come on in leaps and bounds and now anyone can make a quality sound recording at home, using free recording software!

Peggy is a freelance blogger, cartoonist, poet, and e-course creator. Her previous adventures have included running her own hypnotherapy practice and living and travelling on a narrowboat. She’s self-published several e-books about narrowboating, written and illustrated a lyrical picture-book for grown-ups, and written freelance articles for the waterways press.

She has a degree in animation and a diploma in hypnotherapy and her past careers have included managing a music recording studio, working for Friends of the Earth and managing the admin office in a neurosurgical operating theatre.

I’ve already purchased a microphone or recording device. Is it the correct one or do I need to buy something else?

Any low-cost microphone will be fine for this course. But if you haven’t bought one already wait until you’ve received Module One. A separate mic and headphones are better than a headset combination because you can control the input/outputs more easily when they are separate.

I’ve already got recording software. Do I now need to buy something else?

No. We will be using Audacity® for this course which is a free recording and editing software for PC or Mac. This course includes a practical beginner’s guide to using Audacity.

Will I get one-to-one support from Peggy?

No, this is a self-study course. But there is peer support in the Facebook group.

Does this course include how to record my own instruments (eg. guitar, percussion, singing bowls) or how to record background music for my spoken word projects?

No, this is a basic introduction to voice recording. But after completing this course you could easily teach yourself more advanced recording techniques using the free Audacity manual.

Does this course include voice recording, input levels, sound distortion, mixing, sound editing, special effects, how to convert recordings to MP3, how to create an audio lesson, lecture or similar, legal rights when using other people’s music, where to get bespoke music written for your products, how to record Skype interviews, how to create a guided meditation, and how to create a podcast?
